Introduction

The purpose of this booklet is to draw attention to the Jehovah of the Bible. You will learn the truth, dear reader, that the Lord Jesus is Jehovah and that He is a distinct person within the Godhead (Triune God). All of the Scripture references are taken from the 2013 revision of the New World Translation (NWT) used by Jehovah’s Witnesses, unless otherwise noted. Although man may seek to alter the divine inspiration of the Holy Scriptures, yet our gracious God “did not leave himself without witness in that he did good” (Acts 14:17, NWT). At least three references for every subject are provided in accord with Scripture: “On the testimony of two witnesses or on the testimony of three witnesses the matter should be established” (Deuteronomy 19:15, NWT).

As you discover the truth pertaining to the deity of Christ and His place in the Godhead, you will have a desire to search out all the Truth concerning Him. You will then also learn the truth of the Cross of Christ, Heaven, the Kingdom of God, Death, and other incorrect doctrines you have been taught.

My dear Jehovah’s Witness, I trust that your eyes might be enlightened as to who Jehovah is and that you may realize the truth of 1 Timothy 2:4 “Whose will is that all sorts of people should be saved and come to an accurate knowledge of truth” (NWT). I cannot help but recognize the zeal you have for Jehovah, but unfortunately it is “not according to accurate knowledge” (Romans 10:2, NWT). I pray to God that He will touch your soul and eternally secure you for Christ.

Prayerfully open your Bible and read the quoted references with care. We will confirm together that there are both plural and singular forms of the names of God. This section focuses on the use of these forms rather than each name’s specific meaning. We will examine their usage in order to understand that although God is one—“Listen O Israel: Jehovah our God [Elohim] is one Jehovah” (Deuteronomy 6:4, NWT)—He is also three distinct persons, “Elohim.”

  • The opening revelation of God in the Bible is as Elohim which is in the plural form. From the beginning God desired to manifest the Godhead. Elohim is used in the Old Testament approximately 2,600 times. In light of that, we can understand in simplicity why Genesis 1:26 states, “Then God said: Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness” (NWT). Further in Genesis 11:6-7, “Jehovah then said…Come! Let us go down there and confuse their language” (NWT). Jehovah’s Witnesses assert that God was talking to you, my dear reader, that God counsels with created beings? “Who has come to know Jehovah’s mind, or who has become his adviser?” (Romans 11:34, NWT); “I am Jehovah, who made everything…Who was with me?” (Isaiah 44:24, NWT). The expression “let us,” must therefore describe equality. I encourage you to search for the name Elohim and compare the occasions He speaks in plural.

  • Adonai is another name of the Blessed God. The first time it appears is Genesis 15:2, “Sovereign Lord Jehovah” (NWT). This word, translated as “Lord,” is also in the plural form. If we believe God has inspired the Bible, then we must ask: Is He making mistakes by recording the plural forms of His names? Is He misleading us? Or is He revealing Himself to us? A sincere individual must conclude that God desires to make Himself known to us.

In the New Testament distinct persons of the Godhead are mentioned. In Matthew 28:19 we read, “baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit” (NWT). The translators of the NWT altered “the Spirit” to mean “active force” of God in Genesis 1:2. Does it make sense to you that Matthew 28:19 means “the Father, the archangel, and the active force?” Are you baptized in the name of active force? Later in this booklet we will address the subject of the Holy Spirit more fully. The verse clearly states three names which again brings forth the equality and the oneness of the Godhead.

  • Creation of God. Although creation itself cannot describe the triune God in His fullness, Psalm 19:1 states: “The heavens are declaring the glory of God; the skies above proclaim the work of his hands” (NWT). Are proclaiming what? Have you ever considered that God created many things on the identical principle: three in one and one in three? For example, “man” is spirit, soul, and body and yet one man. This is denied by Jehovah’s Witnesses, but Scripture says, “May the spirit and soul and body of you brothers…be preserved” (1 Thessalonians 5:23, NWT). Other examples include Time—past, present, and future; Sun—shape, light, and heat; and Trees—root, branches, and fruit.

Deity of Christ, OR, The Lord Jesus is Jehovah

Jehovah’s Witnesses affirm they follow the teaching and instruction of the Lord Jesus. With this in mind, read 1 Thessalonians 5:21: “Make sure of all things; hold fast to what is fine” (NWT). I entreat you then to follow with me in Scripture, declaring who Christ is. I know, dear reader, that you are familiar with verses about Christ being the dependent, perfect man before God. Certainly, as a Christian, I also fully believe that, but what makes us magnify the grace and love of God is to know the Lord Jesus as Jehovah. I will address the subject alphabetically with three references each from both the Old and New Testaments. It is my hope that the conclusion of this subject will be: “So that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father” (John 5:23, NWT).

  1. Creator

    • In the Old Testament, we read: “God created” (Genesis 1:1, NWT) and “God said: Let there be light” (v. 3, NWT). “God's own spirit made me, and the Almighty’s own breath brought me to life” (Job 33:4, NWT). “Jehovah, the Creator” (Isaiah 40:28, NWT).

    • In the New Testament, we find: “All things came into existence through him, and apart from him not even one thing came into existence” (John 1:3, NWT). “By means of him all other things were created...All other things have been created through him and FOR HIM” (Colossians 1:16, NWT; read vv. 15-17 for context). “And [referring to the preceding verse]: At the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands” (Hebrews 1:10, NWT).

Having the witness of these verses—and there are many more—how could anyone claim that Jehovah is the Creator and that another created being (the Lord Jesus) is also creator? The truth is they are the same.

    2. First and Last

    • “I, Jehovah, am the First One; and with the last ones I am the same” (Isaiah 41:4, NWT). “Jehovah of armies: ‘I am the first and I am the last. There is no God but me’” (Isaiah 44:6, NWT). “I am the first; I am also the last” (Isaiah 48:12, NWT).

    • Speaking of Himself in Revelation 1:17, the Lord Jesus says, “I am the First and the Last” (NWT). “He says, ‘The First and the Last’” (Revelation 2:8, NWT). “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end” (Revelation 22:13, NWT).

With a clear conscience, can you really separate Jehovah from the Lord Jesus?

    3. God

    • “His name will be called...Mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6, NWT). “Before me no God was formed, and after me there has been none” (Isaiah 43:10, NWT). “The true God, the great and mighty One, whose name is Jehovah of armies” (Jeremiah 32:18, NWT).

    4. I AM

    • “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God [see next paragraph]” (John 1:1, NWT). “Thomas said to him: My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28, NWT). “But about the Son he says: ‘God is your throne forever and ever’” (Hebrews 1:8, NWT).

When you look at the original John 1:1, there is no “a god,” but the Word was “God.” In fact, it is read “and God was the Word.” How dangerous to change the Word of God to make it suitable to man’s thinking rather than allowing the Word of God to adjust us. Do you see the danger of “a god”? It directly contradicts what Jehovah said in the Old Testament, especially Isaiah 43:10. So if Christ is God Almighty (Isaiah 9), why is it difficult to believe, “Is anything too extraordinary for Jehovah?” (Genesis 18:14, NWT)?

    • “This is what you are to say to the Israelites, ‘I Will Become has sent me to you’” (Exodus 3:14, NWT). “See now that I—I am he, and there are no gods apart from me” (Deuteronomy 32:39, NWT). “I am the same One…I am Jehovah” (Isaiah 43:10–11, NWT).

    • “For if you do not believe that I am [he], you will die in your sins” (John 8:24, NWT, 1984 edition). “You may believe that I am [he]” (John 13:19, NWT, 1984 edition). “He said to them I am [he]…when he said to them: I am [he] they drew back and fell on the ground” (John 18:5–6, NWT, 1984 edition).

    5. Judge

    • “Will the Judge of all the earth not do what is right? Then Jehovah said...” (Genesis 18:25–26, NWT). “May Jehovah be the judge, and he will judge between you and me” (1 Samuel 24:15, NWT). “For there I will sit in order to judge all the surrounding nations” (Joel 3:12, NWT).

    • “For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God” (Romans 14:10, NWT). “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of the Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:10, NWT). “I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead” (2 Timothy 4:1, NWT).

I believe that we have established a trend of proving that Christ, although He came down in humility and veiled His glory, is none other but Jehovah the judge.

    6. Savior

    • “They forgot God their Savior” (Psalm 106:21, NWT). “For I am Jehovah your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior...I am Jehovah, and besides me there is no savior” (Isaiah 43:3,11, NWT). “Is it not I, Jehovah? There is no other God but me; a righteous God and a Savior, there is none besides me?” (Isaiah 45:21, NWT).

“And we know that this man really is the savior of the world” (John 4:42, NWT). “And everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved” (Acts 2:21, NWT). “Furthermore, there is no salvation in anyone else, for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must get saved” (Acts 4:12, NWT).

Jehovah speaks in the absolute when it comes to other gods and salvation: “There is none besides me.” Do you think that the one who said in Isaiah 42:8, “I am Jehovah. That is my name; I give my glory to no one else,” will allow a created being to be exclusively known by all the attributes of God unless he is Jehovah? Any person who is sincere before God would acknowledge that the Lord Jesus is none other but Jehovah.

    7. Worshipped

    • “Give Jehovah the glory due his name; bring a gift and come in before him. Bow down to [worship, fall prostrate before, give homage or obeisance to] Jehovah” (1 Chronicles 16:29, NWT). “And bowing down to Jehovah their God” (Nehemiah 9:3, NWT). “Come let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before Jehovah our Maker” (Psalm 95:6, NWT).

    • “Jesus said to him: Go away Satan! For it is written: ‘It is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service’” (Matthew 4:10, NWT).

    • “Where is the one born king of the Jews? For we saw his star [as creator, it belongs to Him] when we were in the East, and we have come to do obeisance to him” (Matthew 2:2, NWT). “When they saw him, they did obeisance” (Matthew 28:16, NWT). “And let all of God’s angels do obeisance to him” (Hebrews 1:6, NWT).

The original words used in all the references given above in the New Testament are all the same Greek word. Just because we use differing words in English does not change the real meaning.

Although there are many other references and titles that belong to Jehovah and refer to Christ, I believe that sufficient titles and references have been given. It will suffice to give a few more references for you, dear reader, to search out on your own:

    • (a) Light: Psalm 27:1, Isaiah 60:20, Micah 7:8, Luke 2:32, John 1:9, and John 8:12

    • (b) Rock: 2 Samuel 22:32, Isaiah 17:10, 1 Corinthians 10:4, and 1 Peter 2:6

    • (c) Lord of Lords: Deuteronomy 10:17, Psalm 136:1–3, 1 Timothy 6:14–16, and Revelation 17:14 and 19:16

Holy Spirit

We will briefly address the subject of the Holy Spirit due to the great importance of this Person whose divinity has also been denied among Jehovah’s Witnesses. From the beginning of the Bible, the compilers of NWT started replacing the references to the Holy Spirit by another description that better fit their belief: “ACTIVE FORCE” (Genesis 1:2). We again thank the Lord that He does not leave Himself without a witness. So let us see what the NWT has to say.

Though you are likely familiar with many references in the Old Testament regarding the Spirit of God, it is with a lowercase “s” because of the official interpretation of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. To help you understand who the Spirit is, several questions are raised after reading verses in the New Testament.

  • Remember the verse from Matthew 28:19, “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit” (NWT). For one to suggest that a person is baptized in the name of the “active force” is very dangerous and here is why:

    • As they were ministering to Jehovah and fasting, the holy spirit said: ‘Set aside for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them’” (Acts 13:2, NWT). So does it make sense to you, my dear Jehovah’s Witness, that an active force can SPEAK? With DIVINE AUTHORITY AND SOVEREIGNTY? FOR HIS WORK? AND POWER OF CALLING? That word “calling” belongs to God.

    • Can an active force “BEAR WITNESS WITH OUR SPIRIT”? (Romans 8:16, NWT) or can it be “PLEADING IN HARMONY WITH GOD”? (Romans 8:27, NWT).

    • Is it possible to grieve an active force? “ALSO, DO NOT BE GRIEVING GOD’S HOLY SPIRIT, WITH WHICH YOU HAVE BEEN SEALED” (Ephesians 4:30, NWT).

    • Can an active force be “THE TRUTH” (1 John 5:6, NWT)? Please read the Gospel of John from chapter 14–16 to know more about HIM who is the “SPIRIT OF TRUTH.”

The answer is crystal clear: The items above cannot be accomplished through a thing called “active force” but instead these things are said and done to and through a PERSON—THE HOLY SPIRIT. Search and prove all things that are recorded where you read of the Triune God acting together as ONE and for ONE PURPOSE for the salvation and blessing of man (e.g., 1 Peter 1:2, NWT).

Conclusion

In conclusion, I would like to plead with all Jehovah’s Witnesses to consider these three profound truths concerning God. The desire is for you to obtain salvation and have eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. He is the Eternal Son—that is His name, Son, not “origin”—and in grace and divine love He humbled Himself to die for you on the cross.

“The one who exercises faith in the Son has everlasting life; the one who disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him” (John 3:36, NWT). The Bible gives absolute assurance that you will be saved and have eternal life by acknowledging who He is, God over all, and what He has done, His work on the cross.

Certainly, if you are able to see the truth concerning divine persons and you have a desire for more answers pertaining to other incorrect teachings (Cross of Christ, Eternal punishment of the unbeliever, Heaven is your portion, etc.), please contact us. We will send you literature or recorded ministry at no cost.

Also, please consider reading the King James Version of the Bible because of its accuracy. If you need one, we would love to send you one at no cost.
